3rd Sunday after Epiphany Year B: Ideas to engage the whole family (especially the littliest) in the RCL readings.

This Sunday some of the Uniting Church in Australia will be conducting The Day of Mourning service. If this is the case for you or you would like your family to expereince this form of worship you will find the service on the UCA facebook page at 9.30am AEDT, or you can use the service notes noting that a child friendly interaction is included in these written notes

If you are requiring the standard Lectionary please continue on to the resources listed below.

You have found a page that uses easily found ideas to help you share the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) readings with children. Instead of sifting through many websites, facebook , pinterest, instagram, and blog posts; this is a one stop shop where I have done the sifting for you to find theologically and developmentally appropriate material for your congregation or family.

These ideas can be used in a church setting as you parent in the pews or in your own home while connecting to a broadcast service or for your daily family devotions.

We are now in the Season of AFTER EPIPHANY. The Liturgical colour is Green.

If worshipping at home you might like to prepare a space to worship which can be permanent or set aside and bought out when you are having private or family devotions.

You might like to start by finding a tablecloth in the liturgical colour, find a candle ( I prefer battery operated ones around children) and add any other touches that remind you of the present season, for example a dove, a cross, etc.

You might like to start with the Lords prayer if at home, or either of these suggestions can be used when the Lord’s Prayer is said within a set service.

FIRST READING: Jonah 3:1-5,10

Today’s reading concentrates on one part of the story of Jonah (and not the part that most kids, in my experience gravitate towards). Try to keep their concentration on today’s reading. If they tell you the rest of the story, praise them then ask them If they know why Jonah went through all of that? Then tell them this part of the story and emphasis that ( ie no big fish bits today)

READ: Whirl Story Bible, read from the ???? on p.128 to the end of p.128

OR Spark Story Bible last paragraph of p.183

ACT OUT: this part of the story. You can use people or your toys or you could make puppets to tell the story.

Make a megaphone: Take a piece of A4 paper and roll it so that it is bigger at one end then the other.

PSALM 62:5-12

For God alone I wait, (fold you arms)
I wait in silence, (put a finger to your mouth as if to say shhh, remeber not to touch your mouth)
for God alone is my rock, (make fists with your hands)
my rock of salvation. (put both fists together)

When you feel that the world is against you
and you can’t tell the lies from the truth –
Put your trust in the Lord,
for he is your strong safety.
Pour out your heart to the Lord,
for he is your true hope.

For God alone I wait, (fold you arms)
I wait in silence, (put a finger to your mouth as if to say shhh, remeber not to touch your mouth)
for God alone is my rock, (make fists with your hands)
my rock of salvation. (put both fists together)

If you’re rich, or if you’re poor –
it matters not a bit to God.
Don’t try to take what isn’t yours –
your value is not in what you own.
All love flows from the heart of God,
All power belongs to God.

For God alone I wait, (fold you arms)
I wait in silence, (put a finger to your mouth as if to say shhh, remeber not to touch your mouth)
for God alone is my rock, (make fists with your hands)
my rock of salvation. (put both fists together)
